Do you need a website if referrals already keep you busy?

A practical guide for contractors deciding between a first website, improving an existing site or leaving a rebuild for later.

The short answer

A website can be useful even if referrals supply most of your work, because people may research your business before calling. But a website is not automatically your next investment. If you have no capacity for more work, your first priority might be clearer project-fit information or a better enquiry process.

When a first website makes sense

Consider a small site if customers cannot reliably find your services, contact details or service area; if important information exists only in social posts; or if you repeatedly explain the same estimate requirements. A website gives you a place to organise that information and link it from your business listings. It does not guarantee more customers.

Five useful page decisions

  1. Home: explain the work you do and who it suits.
  2. Services: describe the jobs you accept, the boundaries and what a customer needs to provide.
  3. About: identify the real business and people customers deal with.
  4. Project examples: show genuine work, with permission and useful context. If you have no publishable examples, do not invent them.
  5. Contact: make the next step simple, especially on a phone.

What should an estimate form ask?

Start with a name, a reliable reply method, location and a brief description. Depending on the job, project timing and photos may be useful. Ask only for information you need and explain how you handle it. A separate marketing checkbox should not be a condition of requesting an estimate.

What about a business email?

An address using your business domain can make your contact details more consistent with your website. Gmail alone does not tell you whether a business does good work. If you change email systems, plan migration, forwarding, authentication and access so existing customers can still reach you.

What should a quote include?

Ask how many pages are included, who supplies copy and photos, what the form connects to, how delivery will be tested and who owns the domain and accounts. Separate one-time work from hosting, mailbox, maintenance and software subscriptions. Agree on revision rounds, handover and responsibility for updates.

Our starting scope

Website & Visibility starts from $2,500 CAD before applicable taxes, for up to five core pages under a written scope. It is a starting point, not a promise that every project costs the same. If your existing website already works, the local foundations review may identify smaller improvements first.
